Facts About The Persian (Farsi) Language

The Persian language is an ancient language, and linguists have names for three different versions of Persian that used in three different times. With more than 110 million people speaking the Persian/ Farsi language, it’s time to understand that the language is more than just a dialect. Persian is the official language of many Asian Nations. The nations that speak Persian include; Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. Besides, Persian is also spoken by many people in Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, immigrants from Central Asia in Russia, and other neighboring countries. In the past, most of these places used to be part of the famous Persian Empire. Below are some interesting facts about the language.

The Persian language is a very romantic

There are many different expressions in this language used to express Love; most of them are very original. They include; (Delbar-am) = It means “The one who holds my heart.” (Jigar-am) = it is a phrase for endearment that means “My sweetie.”

Similar alphabet to the Arabic one

The Persian alphabet is identical to the Arabic alphabet. Although the Persian language is in a diverse family than Arabic, hence their vocabulary and grammar are very different.

The consonants and the vowels in Persian

The Farsi language has twenty-three consonants and six vowels. It has two consonants absent in the English language. The other fact is that it neither has gender, articles, nor number agreement.

Persian is spoken in many Nations

Although Farsi is mostly spoken in Afghanistan, Iran, Tajikistan, and other areas which were traditionally Persian societies, which are part of the Greater Iran. Persian is also spoken in other Persian Gulf countries. The countries include; the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Iraq, Yemen, Oman, as well as large communities in the US.

Persian is used for religious texts

Most of the religious literature in Persian is related to Zoroastrianism and Islam. There are also Persian Manuscripts with Jewish, Christian and Manichean texts. An essential part of Baha’i sacred writings was also composed originally in Persian.

The Persian language has a wealthy literary tradition

The rich literary culture includes; poetry, books, documentaries, and many other artistic and written expressions. However, “Shahnameh,” the great epic of the Kings is what deserves credit.
